Our mil + me candles are hand poured in Melbourne, they use safety tabs on the end of the wicks to keep them in place and hold the wick. These wick tabs are 10mm in length providing additional safety as your candle won't burn below the 10mm recommended safety level of wax. Below we have put together some handy tips so you get the most out of your candles.

Candle Care Tips

The first burn......

When lighting a soy candles for the first time, allow the wax to melt all the way to the sides of the container. The first burn should last as long as it takes to reach all the way to the edges of the container. This creates the ‘burn memory’ of the candle. It will give you maximum fragrance and an even burn pool. At this point blowout your candle and let it reset completely before burning again.

Trim that wick......

Trim your wick before you relight your candle each time to approx 4-5mm. This keeps the integrity of the wick in place. If you notice that your wick has moved off-centre, gently reposition your wick back into the centre whilst the wax is still molten.

That yukko black stuff......

It makes us laugh when someone says that a smoking and sooting candle is ok. It's actually NOT ok, and it shows that their could be many things wrong with the candle you are burning. Things that cause sooting and smoke to flow from your candle wick are that the manufacturer has used the wrong type of wick, Smoke around the top of the jar is not uncommon; this is due to the flame and the fragrance oil burning. There will also be a little soot left on the glass when burning a candle for a long time. We suggest burning your candle for 4 hours at a time max. If you notice soot forming around the top of your jar you can use a damp cloth or baby wipe to clean the glass, returning it to clear again.

Remember to recycle your jar after use! Or even better contact us to discuss our recycling or refill programs. Tips on how best to clean your empty candle jar are listed in our FAQ section.

Please remember your candle has been hand poured, not mass produced. Although every effort is made to ensure consistency, every candle will be different. We have chosen to create a 100% natural product which means when using a natural soy wax

Safety Notes: Failure to follow instruction could result in fire, hazard or injury. Never move a lit candle. Always keep out of reach of pets and children. Place the candle on a stable, heat resistant surface. Avoid exposure to drafts. Never leave a lit candle unattended.  Always leave 1cm of wax at the bottom of the glass to avoid the vessel overheating or breaking when empty.
